Well there comes a time when all things good or bad must come to an end. Class is semi-officially over. We had to present our work to Dr. B Thursday. But we have until school starts to finish up whatever we have left. For me...... a lot more than I had planned. That mysterious file natcher got my last 10 days worth of autocad work. Strangest thing I've seen. After my experience loosing so much due to software crashes in my first computer class at Tech I'm anal about saving my work. But somehow the file vanished. The backup file was 10 days old. So boo for that, luckily she saw my work the day before so she knew I was on it and liked what I had. I still have the 3d stuff I just have to do the hard line drawings in cad for her. Nothing I can't deal with, thankfully she's understanding.
Anyway, Friday I took it easy and lounged around until that afternoon when I decided it was now or never I needed to hit the road, paying for a room where I'm comfy is nice but everyone had left and I was just killing time if I was sitting around and there is way to much to see. So the decision was made it was time to leave. But where to go? I had planned on Prague, then Vienna, and over to Switzerland and Italy. But after reading through some books I bought I decided I really wanted to see this pavilion by Peter Zumthor in Hannover. The rail pass I was going to have to buy allows me to go wherever in the EU I want within 15 days so it was only a madder of lodging and time. So off I went to Brussels to buy my rail pass and take off for Germany. But as always things aren't that smooth
After more bank problems with my card....errrrrrr I finally got my pass. I started this process at 4 pm. Well all ready but the next train wasn't until 11:45 at night. So I had some time to kill. But this did kill 2 birds with one stone. I don't have to pay for lodging. The budget is getting tight and it just got tighter. I could have sworn the guy told me the pass was 580 dollars but it turned out to be euros. 1.25 euros roughly maybe 1.3 to 1 US dollar. The website listed a bunch of different confusing passes ranging from 600 to 715 dollars or so. But that was cheaper than individual tickets. Just through swiss and Italy alone. So.............. budget is really tight, so I'm trying to live on 30 euro a day. So far I'm doing pretty good little over today but yesterday made up for it. Train finally showed up at like 1 or so this morning. It was 90 minutes behind. I was supposed to have a sleeper car I thought but apparently I didn't. I accepted the only spot they had left on the train and that was 2nd class smoking, not a sleeper and 6 in a cabin. The one advantage of the EUrail pass for adults (bummer being old I don't qualify for the cheaper rates on stuff) is that the pass is for 1st class so no more uncomfy crowded seats. It's recommended you reserve seats (they charge like 3-6 euro for this) so you have a spot and don't get stuck like I did on that train.
But I did arrive in Hannover at 7 in the morning bushy eyed, not so bright but ready to go. Some reason I really wasn't that tired all day. I came to see 1 particular building from the expo in 2000. Germany's first and only expo as far as I know. Apparently it was huge. But as usual there's a bummer involved. The one building I went to see I couldn't get to. There was construction going on and that area was blocked off. So I couldn't even see it. I did hang around and walk around all the accessible area, which was a LOT. By the time I got done my legs were tired. So back to the station and head to Berlin. I did see one funny there, I was walking back and saw a local guy with a don't mess with Texas shirt on. That got a chuckle. Oh, and for lunch, budget conscious of course, was Bratwurst, with sauerkraut on a kebab bun, and a coke. (I'm so sick of soft drinks!!!!! But they are cheaper than water usually when I eat, usually there isn't a grocery near by, which is where I usually buy water and fruit, a LOT cheaper.)
So 1st class all the way to Berlin. 1 hr 24 minutes or something like that. (Gotta love high speed trains) No screaming kids, hot sweaty, smelly cabin, sharing seats, or anything else to dampen the trip. Just me in the back with my laptop, a book, and my headphones. Roomy, comfy, Air conditioned and ready for more..... here is a link about the hannover principles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannover_Principles More thumbnails ...
