Today was the first day we actually managed to sleep in a bit. It felt great. Once we got up and started moving around, we met up with Janessa for a trip to downtown Wilmington.
Downtown Wilmington is beautiful. There's a boardwalk on the river with the USS North Carolina battleship on the other shore -- lots of little shops, restaurants, and houses on the walk, it's a great little community. We ate lunch at the George and got some candy and ice cream at Kilwin's. Which had a sign outside that noted the there are products made with peanuts inside and that the _air_ can give people with allergies and allergic reaction.
I tend to think the owner of Kilwin's has a cousin he doesn't like that's allergic to peanuts and just wants to keep her out of the store
Lizzie stuck around to take some pictures then asked me to get her "something with chocolate" before heading back to the car. So I got her some double dark chocolate fudge because it tasted really good. When I brought it back to the car, apparently she had asked for "toffee" and not "chocolate." And, she pointed out, she doesn't even like dark chocolate. Or fudge. A failure on every front for me. But I'd like to point out she finished pretty much the entire quarter pound of the fudge by herself it was so incredibly awful.
We had dinner with Janessa at Panera Bread -- which breaks our unofficial rule of not eating at any chain restaurants on the trip. Lizzie is trying to make it sound ok since we don't actually _have_ a Panera in New Orleans, but I don't know if that actually counts. We'll let this one slide because Panera makes Lizzie happy. It was good to catch up with Janessa one last time before we had to say goodbye to her, Pinky, and Porty (don't ask). See you again in March (if not sooner)!
Later that night, we headed on to Captain Bill's for some mad volleyball action.
Wayne and Gloria made a 2 hour drive just to meet us at Captain Bill's
While at Captain Bill's we got to meet Katie, Brad, Byron, and Maggie. They are all friends of Jackie and Pat's and are some good people. Jackie's team (Jackie, Byron and Brad) played a match and had a long break while they waited for their next opponent to finish. We got to play a short game of pickup which was a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure we slaughtered them, but mostly because Pat was getting inside Brad's head. I do hope we get to see them all again.
Since I was super drunk after having 3 beers, Lizzie was forced into driving for the first time this entire trip. So for the rest of the trip, it's whiskey for me and driving for Lizzie!
A HUGE thank you goes out to Pat, Jackie, and Moonfart for giving us a room for the last 3 nights. It's been nice to have "our own place" for a few days before we head off to have some more adventures. They were all very welcoming and we can hopefully return the favor if they ever find themselves in New Orleans. If you ever find yourself in Wilmington, NC, look them up. Their rates are very reasonable. And they serve a mean kielbasa.
