Barely missed the hurricane

When my wake up call in Miami woke me up yesterday morning at 6:30am, I was less than pleased. But in retrospect, I'm glad that my flight was as early as it was. As it turns out, I missed being stuck in Miami from the hurricane by about 2 hours. There are actually other exchange students that still have yet to arrive because of the storm. Not to mention my good fortune that Barbados rarely sees many of the hurricanes that hit Flordia and Cuba because it's so far south. To say the least, it pleasant information to hear.
As soon as I stepped off the plane in Barbados I think I began to profusly sweat. But I guess that comes with the territory. It's one of the sacrafices that I'm more than willing to make in order to live in the Caribbean. I mean, honestly, the first thing I see when I open my dorm door is the Caribbean sea. The green and turqoise waters are absolutely spectacular at all times of the day, but especially in the morning. It's really hard to sleep in here considering my room doesn't have air conditioning. The humidity just kills you. Meaning I woke up this morning around 6:30am. I don't think I'll ever be able to sleep in past noon here, unless of course I head to the beach and sleep on my towel - which is absolutely a possibility. The beach is about a three minute walk from my dorm (convinent).
The island is absolutely gorgeous. Everything is incredibly lush and green. But it's not a suprise considering how often it rains. It will be sunny and HOT, then two minutes later start to pour. A bit strange, but it's nice to be cooled off by the rain. I don't think I have sweated this much in my life. Every time I move I feel as if I begin
to perspire. I hope my body adjusts to the temperature. I'm sure it will, but right now I'm still used to the South American winter. I can't wait for class -- I'll walk there, be drenched in sweat, and have to sit there for a hour and a half stinking. I feel for those who will have to sit next to me. But indoors (the classrooms anyway) are well air conditioned. In fact, most of the rooms are freezing. I'll probably need to bring a sweatshirt to class. Then immidiately take it off as I step into the scalding heat and humidity.
Unfortunately, my dorm is not afforded the same luxuries as the classrooms. My dorm is more or less a prison cell. I have four brick walls, a built in desk, a closet,
and two windows. The windows, which would normally be a source of escape from the brick walls, are instead the type where you have to turn the knob and push them open. Thus leaving my room with a prison like atmosphere. Unless my door is open, my only view of the outside world is through bars...surrounded by bricks. But who can complain when the first thing that I see when I open my door or look out the window is the ocean? I know I said it before, but I'm going to emphasize it (aka rub it in) coming from Davis.
Hope you're all doing well. Send me your addresses so I can write to you. It'll be much easier for me to send postcards/letters to you via snail-mail because I don't have internet access as readily available to me. Anyway, talk to you soon. I send my love to you all. Keep in touch.

One lucky girl, notwithstanding the prison dorm. I'll be in Spain pretty soon... let me know where you're studying there!
