Monday April 2nd - Puntarenas, Costa Rica

We decided to stay local at the port and look for a decent internet connection. Almost anyone using the ships' internet facility agrees that it is hopelessly slow and ridiculously expensive! We went ashore reasonably early but it was very hot and humid right from the start of the day and it wasn't long before we were all struggling with the heat - it felt like the right decision not to have taken an organised trip to a jungle area or river trip. An internet café was duly located and we were able to upload Travelpod and photo's at a very low cost, even though it took a couple of hours. After a bit of shopping we were all very glad to return to the ship - it's a lovely area but the heat had defeated us all.

Wednesday April 4th - Huatulco, Mexico

Our day in Huatulco was good fun but we were also sad to say goodbye to our friends from the ship, Mack and Aubelia, who live in Mexico and would leave the ship by the end of the day. To begin with however they had a plan to hire a boat and visit some of the many nearby bays and see the sights, so along with Bill & Jan from Ohio, we went ashore by tender and negotiated a boat trip for a couple of hours. The boat owner, Gilbert, wanted to be sure of the number of people involved before he would agree a price and this was complicated by the fact that others were keen to join in. Eventually we had no option but to exclude any additions in order to agree on pricing but once underway we had an excellent time. As we left the port two things became clear - there were endless numbers of pelicans around, so lots of pictures of these chaps, and the sea had a good swell about it which was going to test the old sea legs - luckily we had taken some motion sickness tablets earlier! We visited a number of bays - one with a blow hole created by waves driving the sea into a cave which was then forced upwards through a small gap creating an impressive 'blow' from the rocks above. Another bay gave us a swimming opportunity but was a bit chaotic with boats all around. It was an amusing sight to see us attempt to get back into the boat having done some swimming - not the most elegant of sights! We returned to the main harbour after an excellent trip and it was time for our goodbyes to Mack & Aubelia - we had grown to be good friends and miss them now as the cruise has moved on - they were also lovely with Josh and he often wanted to spend time with them so he misses them too.
