Hervey Bay and Fraser Island
Entry 10 of 42 | show all | print this entry |
After a lot of driving we decided to stop a few days at Hervey Bay which gives access to Fraser Island. The first day we took a walk to find the marina. Local map made it look fairly close but once again we realised distances are far greater hear so finally gave in an caught the local bus. We stopped to grab a bite at the Hervey Bay Boat Club, which turned out to be a sort of glorified bingo hall with prizes such as a tin of mixed veg!!! Made a SNAP's raffle look positively luxurious!!! Took a walk on he beach and came across a Pelican swimming in the sea. Then on to the aquarium which had an extraordinary array of fish and a touch pool where we all stroked the Green Back turtles. Mixed feelings about seeing them there but conditions were excellent. After a quick play in the park it was time to make our way back to Sheila, it was a long way back as we had manged to miss the bus.
Life in Sheila is good most of the time and now the rain has ceased its much quieter!! Having to pack up the living area every night to get to bed is getting a little tiresome now. We have our 'stuff' everywhere which is going to make for a big clear up operation in Brisbane.
Fraser Island
We took a day trip to Fraser Island the largest sand island in the world. Our journey started with a ferry crossing then we boarded a 4x4 coach! We hadn't realised that roughly 75% of the day would be spent negotiating difficult sand roads which threw you around on the bus, and Josh chose the back seats for us all!!!! Despite this it made for a very interesting day including stops at a freshwater creek, ship wreck on the beach , rainwater lake and an uscheduled stop for a tyre blowout - we told them not to use remoulds! Ian and Josh took the chance for an island flight in a 7 seater plane, which turned out to be a bit hairy! But a great way to get a good view of the island. Whilst in the bus we managed to spot stingrays in the sea, and evey caught sight of three Dingo's on the beach. Its very rare to see even one. After afternoon tea we had to get back into the bumpy bus, something that none of us were looking forward to. In the end we were very glad to see the ferry.
