We left Townsville in the pouring rain and it's now been 3 days of constant and mostly torrential rain and we have almost literally washed up at Rockhampton. Along the way we spent a couple of days at Airlie Beach, an understandably famous area and gateway to The Whitsundays, an equally famous area of great natural beauty, except in torrential rain it's almost impossible to appreciate! We mooched around the town and found an excellent secondhand bookshop run by a lady from Essex; we stocked up with a few Oz travel books to read in the camper. Luckily yet another excellent caravan park kept Josh amused - it doesn't seem to matter much about the rain when you're in the swimming pool.

We decided to press on and drive as far as we could in the conditions so here we are at Rockhampton which was quite a slog for everyone. Along the way we stopped in a town called Sarina and picked our way through what seemed like rivers running down the street to the nearest café. This turned out to be run a lady from the US and was a bit of a treasure trove - good food and drinks, internet connection, clothes and other bit and bobs for sale, and the biggest selection of beads and beadmaking kit we have ever seen. Josh ended up with a necklace of tropical fish beads.
Back on the road we continued to cross rivers and creeks that were swelling by the minute - a difficult drive and we've all had enough of it now.

The rain remains unrelenting so we will try to make the best of it and head into town; there's a lot of activities on offer but being Oz they are mostly outdoors, but we'll see and let you know!

Weather!
Hi folks,
Sorry to hear the weather is not so good but I'm glad Josh is being kept amused at the parks. I checked worldweather.org which shows the average rainfall for this time of year around Cairns is a lot greater than Brisbane, so the further south you go the better it should get. The forecast looks good for the coming week, but you've probably found that out already. Thanks for the postcard, we got one from a friend in Thailand this week too! Keep going, keep enjoying it,
Love Richard & Po.
