Cairns day 4
Well today we were joined by another fellow traveller, her name is "Sheila" she has four wheels and two double beds, yes she is our camper, or should I say Winnebago! Can you believe it we are travelling around in a Winnebago! It wasn't by choice it just happened that way. Well the trip to meet up with Sheila was a very fraught one, we made our way to Cairns to collect her on the bus, no problems, but then we had to walk a little, or so we thought! Those of you who have been to the States will know that you don't walk anywhere as everything is so spread out, well Oz is just the same. Whilst trekking the heavens opened and we were drenched, even with our mac's on, it's the rainy season here at the moment so it really rains! We were getting late for pick up so Ian went on ahead and Josh and I trailed behind. In the end we had to sit it our under a shop front till it got lighter, it didn't so we just ploughed on bare foot(it was easier than walking at speed in flip-flops) then I heard a car horn toot, it was my knight in a shining Winnebago! Ian had convinced the bloke to come out and get us, thank goodness.
After going over everything about the van and counting the inventory we were let loose on the road. She is lovely, only a year old and very well equipped; the best thing is Air Con. Not something those who are reading this will need right now, but believe me its essential here at the moment. It was our last day in our apartment so we made it back there to pack and enjoy the salt water pool for the last time. Actually I packed and Josh and Ian enjoyed the pool!!!!!
Cairns/Cape Tribulation day 5
Having been given a recommendation to go to Cape Tribulation, just north of Cairns, we left our apartment around 11am for the long drive. Looking at the map it didn't look far!!
It took 3 hours to get there, through rainforest and many many sugar cane fields, banana plantations and even crossed the croc infested Daintree river via a car ferry. The camping ground was definitely off the beaten track out in the wilderness. Spectacular views and nature all around, even a lonely looking 4ft lizard who passed our van. Facilities were very basic, what you would expect for backpackers who frequented the site. The toilet block frightened the life out of me, massive beetles and a very large spider stopped me from entering.
The beach, was accessed through a spider infested clearing in the bush directly in front of our van, was worth the drive. The temperature had dropped and the beach was in the shade somewhat, but that was ok by us!
Little sand crabs were scuttling around our feet. It seems such a shame not to be able to paddle our feet in the water, its so inviting, but the jellyfish around here are lethal at this time of year and nobody goes in. We have heard that the problem won't be the same down Sydney way, let's hope not.
