Easter in the chocolate capital of Argentina; what a lucky coincidence.
Arrived on Good Friday evening to our lovely modern hotel on the edge of the huge and beautiful Lake Nahuel Huapi.
First thing after breakfast on Saturday we walked into town to buy Easter Chocs. The main street has lots of chocolate shops and we had read and been told that Mamuschka was the best. We could hardly get into the shop as it was packed.
Once inside we realised we had to take a number ticket and wait; there were about 40 people before us so we waited patiently while perusing and trying to decide which of the numerous types we would choose. Finally got served then had to queue to pay and then again to collect our purchase. Amazing place. They also have a cafe so we stayed and had fresh hot chocolate which was so thick and rich; pure liquid chocolate heaven. It was Easter so we could have a treat or 2. They had great Easter window displays and if you look at the photo you may see a chocolate koala; not sure why? Couldn't see any bilbys. Bariloche is another beautiful Alpine-type town with wooden chalet-like buildings and is a ski resort in winter. The surrounding mountains and lakes are beautiful and we took a cable car to the top of one of the mountains for superb views and lovely walks. The autumn weather was perfect and so glad not to be there in the cold winter snow.
On Easter Saturday we were in the town square and there seemed to be a wood-sculpting competition and we were amazed to see the shapes appearing as the 'sculptors' attacked the tree trunks with chain saws. The final results were quite interesting.
The restaurants here are excellent and there are several of the Argentinian Parilla (barbecue) restaurants. Huge quantities of beef cooked on huge wood-fired barbecue grills and so tasty and inexpensive. Excellent local red wine to wash it down.
One of the best ice-cream stores in Argentina here too. Food heaven. There is a distinctly Italian atmosphere here and certainly in the pizza and pasta restaurants which compete with the Parillas.
There are lots of walks to do in the surrounding hills at this time of year (just as well considering the quality of the food) and we enjoyed the fresh, clean air. We will miss all this beautiful Andean scenery and crisp mountain air.
