After all our months of planning we have started our journey.
We had a hectic day on Saturday 9th packing up the caravan and putting it and the truck into storage. Train to Brisbane then relaxing overnight stay at the Novotel before flying out on Sunday morning. Great day to fly out of Brisbane as there was very little traffic so no delays on the road.
The Qantas flight to Wellington was excellent with a delicious lunch accompanied by some good NZ wine (Te Mania pinot noir from Nelson - delicious). May as well start as we mean to go on.
Walked about 25 minutes out of the city to Oriental Bay for a seafood dinner; good exercise after the flight.
This morning, Monday, we rode the cable car to the top of the hill and then walked back into the City through the Botanic Gardens. Great views and the vegetation and weather remind us of the UK. Wellington lived up to its reputation as a windy city but a pleasant temperature for walking. We did need our Goretex jackets, though.
I am writing this sitting on the interisland ferry to Picton, our first stop in the north of the South Island, while David reads a book beside me. The sea looks rough but the boat seems fairly stable so we should be OK. David has his anti-nausea wrist bands on and has taken a Kwell so he is well prepared.
