We caught a fast boat to Perhentian Kecil, the smaller of the two main Perhentian Islands, where we were faced with a choice of beaches to be dropped at - we chose D'Lagoon, a guesthouse all by itself at the northern end of the island, rignt on the water on a coral reef, backed by lush, green jungle.

We snorkelled around the reef and saw so many different coloured and shaped fish, including some enormous parrotfish which bared their teeth at us and looked quite scary!! That wasn't to be our only encounter with weird and wonderful animals - D'Lagoon has a resident civet cat (like a really big possum!) who comes to the guesthouse every night to run aound the ceiling beams and be fed bananas on a stick by the owner and enthusiastic guests. There were also large monitor lizards (including one very fat one over 2 metres long) who would wander down from the jungle behind us to be met with camera flashes and screams! They mostly seemed interested in rummaging around in the bits of dead coral heaped on the beach. Another highlight was one rainy night when some just-hatched baby sea turtles appeared as they were attracted to the lights at the guesthouse.

After spending a few lazy days snorkelling in bath-warm clear water (it's a hard life!) we decided to walk to the other side of the island to Turtle Beach via a marked path. Less than 100 metres into the walk we were confronted by a large, angry looking monkey blocking our path. It decided to chase us in a psychotic manner (unprovoked of course!) and we bolted back to our safe little D'Lagoon world, running faster than we had in a very long time! We later met a girl with cut feet who'd had a similar encounter plus it stole her passport and money, so it could have been worse!

We didn't really want to leave, but felt it was too early in our journey to just stay and stay somewhere so decided to head up to Thailand...
