Sleeping in a tent does have the advantage of ensuring you get an early start. We were up, fed, packed and on the road again by 8am. With one eye on the fuel gauge we made our way to Tres Lagos, which other than the lovely views over Lago Cardiel wasn't very exciting. We made it just as the needle hit red so we had loads to spare! No panic (except that it took us about 20 minutes to locate the petrol station in this tiny crappy town). They guy could only sell us 100 pesos worth of fuel as he was running short but this was enough to get us the rest of the way to El Chalten.

The drive in to El Chalten is spectacular. After leaving the Ruta 40 you follow a paved road along the side of the enormous Lago Viedma. The entire time you have the most incredible view of the Viedma glacier, Cerro Torre, Cerro Fitz Roy and the whole surrounding range. It's hard not to keep stopping and taking snaps. Just before you get to town there is a final mirador that gives a nice view of the town with Fitz Roy behind. We were really lucky though as while we were stopped there we got what was effectively a fly over by 2 condors and a bunch of buzzards and eagles. They all must have been riding some thermal in over our heads and they came very close. Hard to get good pictures but it was really cool to see condors so unexpectedly and unorganised like that.

We booked into Thiambalu which was a little over the budget but was so much nicer than all the other places we looked at. It also had wifi in the room which meant we could do what we’d been waiting for a while for. Ring our families about the 'big news’! Cue plenty of squealing and woohooing (especially form Liz’s mam and my sister Dee) and even though the delay on skype was terrible due to the slow internet we eventually got the message across to everyone. 'Delighted’ was the word of the day.
