So I woke up this morning with everything completely the same as the day before, except I was engaged!! Unfortunately we couldn't linger on that thought for long because we had to get up, pack away the tent and make breakfast.  Our aim today was to make it to Los Antiguos, a town right on the Chilean border and a long drive for us – we had to back track our 100km totally worth it detour from yesterday before we could even start heading in that direction.  We were a little interested to see whether we could actually get to Los Antigous anyway because before we left the land of wifi a few days earlier we had read that the town was in evacuation alert because Volcan Hudson was showing activity! The drive was more paved than we expected even compared to our map which is quite recent, which was a bit of a shame as it wasn’t as rugged as we expected.  The areas where they are currently paving are really tough work because the temporary road is actually worse than the original gravel road (and it doesn’t give the best views when there are tractors and diggers in between you and the mountains).  Despite the fact that we had a long drive anyway we decided to do a Liz and Kevin side trip to Sarmiento.  The plan was to then go and see the petrified forest 30km from there but as the road is unpaved we realised we didn’t have enough time to do that so just had lunch and headed back to the 40.  The most pointless side trip ever despite the lovely views over Lago Muster on the way, although I was quite glad because the advertising pictures for the petrified forest is just a log! Oooo!  Not sure what I was expecting but when that was the picture they used to advertise the place the rest would have been even less inspiring.

We reached Perito Moreno, the town where we turned off to Los Antiguos and there was no sign that we couldn’t go there so we just drove that way.  The scenery in was amazing. Gorgeous mountains over the massive Lago Buenos Aires.  The town was up and running so we booked into a Cabana and went for some food.  A very relaxing first day as a 'fiancÚ’!
