We picked up our car earlyish and headed straight out of Salta. We decided to go to Cafayate first because there are quite a lot of things to stop at and see through the Quebrada de Cafayate and we knew we wouldn't have time to actually stop and look around if we did this part of the drive on the last morning.  It took about an hour to reach the Valle Calchaquies and from here the scenery suddenly got stunning.  Red rock and mountains, endless views and cool rock formations.  The first place to stop on the way is called Garganta del Diablo (the Devil’s throat), and is a big slit in some red rock which you can climb and clamber into.  The next place is the Amphitheatre which is a massive area you can walk into with sheer walls up around you.  The last 'sight’ is a rock called El Sapo (the frog), which supposedly looks like a frog.  It doesn’t. At least you don’t have to pay to see it!  We started to drive passed some vineyards and realised we were close to Cafayate – the main place for wine in the Salta region

Once we were settled in town we took a walk around to find some wine tasting in town (after eating a pile of empanadas from the empanada place in town).  First we went to a really small winery where they only make 3 types of wine.  For ARS5 we were only allowed to try 1 and it wasn't that nice.  Next we stumbled across El Transito which was very fancy looking and gave free wine tastings.  We were straight in there.  And the Cabernet Sauvignon was so lovely we just had to buy some.  Finally we went to Bodega Nanni where we got a tour of the actual winery which was good and then Kevin did the tasting (it cost money and included 2 whites and a rose so I didn't see the point!).  The red wine that was included in the tasting was lovely so we took away one of those as well!  It took us a long time that evening to find somewhere for dinner because I wanted a salad!  If it doesn't come with steak, chips or pastry here they are a little thin on the offerings but we found somewhere eventually.
