Where I stayed
The first thing we did in Bogota was a bit of shopping. We bought a few things to prepare for our trip down the amazon including a spare camera battery, a cheap pair of binoculars and Liz was obviously expecting a long trip as she bought The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky
Once we had the shopping out of our system we thought we would do some cultural stuff. First we checked out the Botero museum, which has some classic fat paintings by Botero including a fat Mona Lisa and lots of fat naked women. There are also a few works by other modern artists but the most interesting rooms are those showing the Botero paintings. We also went to the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) which is a really impressive museum of hundreds of gold objects from pre-Incan and Incan cultures. It’s really well organised with plenty of information and some really impressive pieces. Well worth a visit.
On our last day we were walking through the city getting a bit peckish when some guy thrust a freshly cooked piece of pork at us to try. It was so good we immediately got ourselves a table and were subsequently served the biggest plate of food we've had in a while. Absolutely gorgeous. We followed that up with a visit to the cinema. I know we're in Colombia sometimes you need a break to do something 'normal'
We also celebrated our anniversary with a really nice dinner in a place called El Gato Gris in the Candelaria area. Really good food (first roast potatoes I’ve had in ages!), cool little building and great service. We even saw the service they’ll give to you when they started putting out heart cushions and flower petals on the table beside us. We were very disappointed when the couple arrived and just acted like they were out for a normal dinner – they weren’t even dressed up. They were in and out in no time. All that effort for nothing!
