Where I stayed
The Arena, North Avoca
Stuart Road, Manly
The next day we made our way to meet my Aunty Carmel who is over to visit her son Billy his wife Kathy and their one year old son Liam. They were spending the week in their new house in Avoca north of Sydney so we caught the train out to meet them. Billy was still up at work in Newcastle so we met up with Cam, Kathy and Liam and went for lunch in Terrigal. It was really nice to see them, and Liam was great fun. He’s a really cute little boy and gave us endless entertainment just watching him running around, mostly bare-bottomed
We headed back to Sydney and out to Manly where my friend Pete is living – he was nice enough to put us up for the couple of days whilst we were in Sydney. We caught the ferry out to Manly which was really cool as by this stage it was dark and we got to cruise past the Opera house and Harbour bridge all lit up. We went out for a few pints with Pete and his girlfriend Lucy in Manly and then watched Inception in their underground cinema!!
After a late start due to sleeping in and a lazy brunch in Pete’s house we caught the ferry into the centre to do our sightseeing i.e. the Opera House and the bridge! The Opera house is weird as it felt like I’d been there before due to the number of times I’d seen it in pictures or movies, and when you get up close it looks oddly dated for some reason. Something to do with the colour and style of the tiles used on the roof I guess. We then met up with Darren and his girlfriend An who we’d bumped into on the Ocean Road and went for lunch and a few pints
The next morning we were up and gone in the taxi by 6 and on the way to the airport. Our flight was at 8.20, or so we thought. We arrived at the airport and headed to the Jetstar desk as our itinerary said they were running our flight. I went to the board to check it was the right area as Liz queued up. No flights to Christchurch at that time, actually no flights at all at that time. Maybe we should be in the domestic terminal. I went back to Liz and she pulled out the itinerary. The flight was at 7.15. It was 6.45. AAGGHHHH!!! We ran to the Qantas desk as it was actually their flight but we were too late. Nooooo! Our round the world ticket is such that if you miss a flight they cancel all the rest of your ticket so this was looking like a disaster. Incredibly the girls at the Qantas desk were so nice and just put us on the same flight the next day at no charge and confirmed that all our following flights were fine. Legends. Imagine we’d been on Ryanair. We sat down in the airport a bit dazed and feeling like we’d dodged a bullet. Probably both our faults we didn’t know what time our flight was - Liz had assured me it was 8.20 but said I could check if I wanted the night before. I won’t trust her again!
