Where I stayed
We hit all the highlights including Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, Tolmer Falls and Buley Rockhole. All very beautiful. We had lunch by one of the many creeks and had a visit from a huge eagle/kite which was cool. We also checked out the massive cathedral termite mounds and the razor sharp mounds of the magnetic termites.
Our aim was to make it as far south as Katherine that night so we left Lichfield at around 3pm and back onto the Stuart Highway. It was slow going because there was a torrential downpour for the first 2 hours and by the time we rocked up at our campsite it was already dark. Unfortunately this meant that we missed the fact that the campsite we were staying in, Springvale, was actually of historical interest being one of the oldest homesteads in the area!
Because of the rain and temperature, the humidity was unbearable that night. Cooking was again a struggle and we had to keep taking it in turns to stand over the cooker so we could have regular breaks where we sat down. We weren’t able to stand outside because the hot tropical parts of Australia are crawling with bugs and insects that you don’t want crawling all over you….. By the time dinner was ready we had sweat running all over us and it really wasn’t an attractive sight!
On a positive note we got to see our first wild Kangaroos of the trip which were hopping around the campsite taking advantage of the 'cooler’ night air. A trip to the toilets was more like a nature walk as we also saw an owl, green frogs, big fat toads, massive spiders, geckos, and even the red eyes of some fresh water crocodiles in the nearby creek reflecting our torchlight! Struth!
