We did our first illegal night stop when we finally arrived here from Coober Pedy. It was after 10pm, the stop we were heading for apparently didn't exist anymore and when we reached the last stop before Wilpena Pound Kevin said 'I’m done, we’re staying here’.  My fear of breaking the rules at least meant that we got up early so we could head on before we got caught!!

Wilpena Pound is the main draw of the Flinders and as we were once again short on time (Darwin to Sydney in 18 days may not have been the most realistic idea) we decided we would just see it and go. Often mistakenly taken for as a meteorite crater, Wilpena Pound is in fact a very large almost circular depression or anticline where the surrounding hills have been eroded away leaving a ring of hills around the pound. We did one of the many walks that take you up the side of these hills for spectacular views of the pound itself, and also the surrounding plains and hills. This was another place Liz had been during her time in Oz and she thinks she did the same walk last time and found it a real struggle. Glad to report our high altitude Himalayan training and probably healthier diet and reduced alcohol intake over the last few months meant we breezed up with no problems (Liz was actually a little disgusted with herself that she was such a wuss the last time, although it was 40 degrees that time so I let her off). We met a really nice Australian couple in their 50s with their 12 year old son, who were on an amazing trip. They had taken their son out of school, were home schooling him and were spending 9 months driving around Australia in a 4x4. Only 3 weeks in they were enjoying it but it would be interesting to see them a few months down the road!
