Alice Springs comes as a bit of a shock after so many miles of nothing. It's the town closest to the centre of Australia and is actually surprisingly large and civilised looking. Lots of pretty suburbs to drive through and a town centre that makes you forget how far you are from anything. We went for a big (expensive) aussie breakfast and then for a wander. We'd decided we wanted to buy a didgeridoo as a souvenir from Australia so headed for the rather oddly named 'Sounds of Starlight Theatre’ which pretty much sells just didgeridoos. Standing staring at the racks of wooden tubes the owner came over and asked "You play a bit of didge?" Not so much. After a lot of chat about termites, flares and back pressure (?) we opted for one of the unpainted ones and paid to have it shipped home as it was pretty big. The owner also threw in a free lesson. Unfortunately my trombone playing didn’t seem to help and the farting noises I was producing are gladly not recorded. More practice needed but even as something to look at it’s a nice bit of art.

We then headed west for a quick trip in to the McDonnell ranges. We were now apparently in the "red centre" of Australia but as we’d noticed on the drive down, due to all the rain it’s currently the green centre. A little disappointing at first but the scenery is incredible either way really. Apparently some grass they imported from South Africa to bind the soil has run riot which isn’t helping. We saw Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap, but unfortunately didn’t see any of the rock wallabies that are supposed to live there. We did climb a small nearby hill though which gave incredible views of the valley and made us wish we had a bit more time in Australia to explore….next time! We then had to get back on the road to head towards King’s Canyon and Uluru.
