Luang Prabang is a gorgeous place. It's kind of a cross between Hoi An in Vietnam and Vientiane – with the UNESCO World Heritage tag and preserved buildings of Hoi An but less 'toy town’ and more real like the capital. We didn’t do a huge amount with our 3 days there, just wandered around a lot and got to know the city.  Obviously it involved some degree of coffee drinking and brownie eating, which has become a staple of our city stays.

In our attempt to continue the shoestring feature of our trip we did decide on Friday to walk the 2 km in the midday heat from the city centre to the bus station in order to buy our tickets to the Thai border, to avoid the ‘hefty’ additional charge vendors in town add.  After sweating and burning and dragging ourselves down the scorching road, we arrived to be told we could buy them that day, but it would incur a charge to book a day in advance, but as long as we arrived early we would have no trouble getting tickets on the day.  We looked at each other, cried, and got a tuktuk back to town.  We still saved overall but weren’t so smug.
