There isn't a lot to do or see in Tha Khek other than a normal largish Laos town, which is why we hadn’t planned on spending any time here other than an overnight stop on our way to Kong Lo caves (I assume it will be the next entry!). However, I got sick (projectile vomiting to be exact) during the night and couldn’t face the 7.30am start for the direct bus or the hassle of the indirect route. Therefore we spent a very quiet, lazy, nothingy day here! After a catch up on sleep we finally made it out of the hostel into the centre of town. The setting is really beautiful on the Mekong overlooking Thailand, and thanks to the French architects from back in the day there are some lovely buildings with shutters and balcony’s. Unfortunately I started to feel ill again so we didn’t get to walk around for long, but for people with time to spare in Laos it’s worth delaying a day taking off around the rest of the area to sit in one of the cafes on the river front and have a relaxing day away from the main tourist route.
