We arrived in Vientiane at about 6pm and were surprised to find all the cheap to fairly cheap guesthouse options full. We wandered around for a bit and even had a very helpful old Frenchwoman come up to us and ask if we were looking for a room. "Yes" we said hoping she'd have some info. "I’ve been looking for ages too" she says “there are none” and walks off. Tres helpful! We were both very tired after our Vang Vieng experience and eventually decided to just take a room in one of the more mid-range options and feck the cost. Still less than 20 a night and worth it in the end.

Vientiane is a very relaxing city. Doesn’t really feel like a capital at all. Small enough to walk around, relatively clean (nothing on Singapore but pretty), and feels like areal place. Hard to say what I mean by that but it just feels like it has developed slowly and naturally and not had modernness thrown on it. It’s a place I could imagine living and running a book shop or coffee shop, although it already has its fair share of those. Liz did her best to try every latte and brownie in the city which is a fair challenge!

We also had an interesting half hour chat with a 60 year old South African man who lives in Hawaii who called himself Tygabee. Highlights include: "I'm going to carve this driftwood into a penis so you can give it to your wife" "I dont like the word penis, I prefer big c*ck" "Let me show you the under water house I'm building in the Mekong" "Charlize Theron is directing the film of my life, I told her we were never having sex as she's like my sister" "I once stole a first class air ticket from Gary Player" "I'm getting over TB and have 3 brain tumours" "Are my pants dirty from the rock? Good, that's the way i like them" When he produced a massive kitchen knife and table top, that he used to practice his knife throwing, from his bag when looking for the script of his life, we decided to politely make an exit. Hmmmm.
