Having eventually left Singapore after our extended stay, we took a bus from Singapore to Malaysia, with our first stop being a small city called Melaka on the west coast.  If only the bus journeys and border crossings for the rest of the trip are as easy and seamless as this one, although i having a funny feeling they won't be! The only slight mishap came when i dropped my passport down the toilet at the Malaysian border, but i won't go into that...or the new yellow tint on the pages!

Melaka is a nice place although nothing to really rave about.  The highlight of our stay there was watching Kevin try to learn how to spin a spinning top.  The old man who ran the spinning top school - and claimed he could teach anyone in 5 minutes - clearly hadn't counted on Kevin being a student! It at least gave us a few minutes of entertainment and also a refuge during one of our first massive rain storms of the trip - we've hit the tropics!

One downside of a budget trip is that when you are staying in rooms at the lower end of the scale there's the possibility that the rain will come right through the roof which is exactly what happened to us here.  Luckily after a bit of complaining and refusing to accept a worse alternative room it was fixed that same night and none of our things were ruined.  As we are sure that eventually our stuff will get ruined/lost/stolen (realistic not pessimistic) we're grateful any time we come off ok in a situation!
