After an epic (painful) 12 hour bus journey on 1 November we arrived in Kathmandu ready for a rest!  That evening we had our most expensive meal so far (Liz not happy) which cost us 10! The next day wasn't overly eventful and mostly involved drinking coffee and taking advantage of the hundreds of wifi networks in Thamel.  Kathmandu is an incredible place. Much of the outskirts are pretty similar at first glance to cities in India but Thamel, the tourist area in the city, is like Disneyland for trekkers! That night we dropped the budget and went for a very nice dinner, wine a plenty of beers. Great night of live music and finishing with cocktails. First proper hangover of the trip!

We spent the morning sitting around again awaiting Dads arrival. He arrived looking suitably refreshed after getting a free upgrade to 1st class on his flight from Abu Dhabi! The drive through Kathmandu was an eyeopener for him with the madness of the traffic and the activity on the streets bringing out plenty of "jeez". We've been up to plenty of sightseeing etc since and also did a trial run hike up one of the hills around Kathmandu. Thought i was going to die in the first 10 mins as we set off a bit quick, Liz's breakfast was making a comeback, but we got to the top eventually for some amazing views of Kathmandu valley and the Himalayan peaks beyond. That night we had a lovely Italian in pre-celebration of Liz's birthday as her actual birthday is on the day we fly!

We also got the chance to experience real Nepali culture when Rajan, the owner of our tour company, invited us to his sisters house to take part in their Tika ceremony, the final day of the Nepali Divali celebrations. his when brothers and sisters get together and the sisters honour their brothers with gifts and food but also painting a Tika on their forehead. Rajans sister was kind enough to give each of us one also making for some great pictures!

Now after two nights of luxury (we've bunked in with Dad in his hotel!) we're off to Lukla to start the trek tomorrow morning. Squeaky bum time for Dad but hopefully all will go well. Everest (base camp) here we come!
