Where I stayed
After a good sleep and a breakfast we headed off to sightsee Bangkok, meaning we did the LP walking tour and saw the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. The Grand Palace is very extravagant which is portrayed to some extent in the photos and Wat Pho is a huge reclining Buddha, which caused Kevin to say 'Jesus!’ in shock when he glanced the head through the door when we were heading in.
Kanchanaburri is west of Bangkok and is famous for the Bridge over the River Kwai, as in the film. We decided to do a long day trip to take in the war cemetery, museum, train ride on the Kwai railway and a local waterfall. Although it was a long day it was very interesting to find out about the construction of the railway and the treatment of the POWs who were made to work on the railway. The museum was a little strange because despite being a museum about the railway it also had sections on pre-history,Buddhism and villains of other wars in addition to those involved in WW2.
One place which we took Mum and Paul to was Patpong. We went there in order to take advantage of the big night market in order to stock up on souvenirs. However, the other famous thing about Patpong is that it’s where, if so inclined, you can go to see a ‘Ping Pong Show’, or as advertised in the even less classy establishments, a ‘Pussy Show’
We waved goodbye to Mum and Paul on the Saturday and so we had one last night in Bangkok and on Khao San road before our flight to Australia the next day. We had a bus booked for 8am in the morning to take us to the airport, and as we have been extra vigilant when setting the alarm since we missed our alarm in Siem Reap months earlier we were confident that it would be safe to go out. Hmmmmm. We found ourselves at 3am getting falafels from a food stand and on the way back to our hotel popped into a bar for a night cap and some shisha. Fair enough. We then got back to the hotel and chatted on skype until 6am (whilst packing).Again fine. We then went to bed for an hour after which time the alarm went off. And I hit off instead of snooze. Unfortunately that’s about as interesting as the story gets because I luckily actually woke up at 8.15am so although we missed our bus we had plenty of time to get to the airport. We couldn’t help but be a little disappointed in ourselves though as although making a better story, it wouldn’t have been ideal to wake up once our flight to Singapore had left! Lesson learnt….we hope!
