Paris in the spring, absolutely spectacular and still in the shoulder season so the crowds have not descended on Paris yet. We were offered free accommodation with a lovely couple we met in Turkey, an offer too good to refuse. So here we are, completely changed our destination. On our arrival Didier cooked us a tasty dinner then off we went in his car for a night tour of Paris, it was amazing. I had forgotten how beautiful Paris is. Got to bed about 2am.
17/05/2013:Broke our walking record today, wandered around Paris for 14 hours. We did all the sites, had lunch in the park, spent an hour in a cafe talking to a very interesting 75 yr old man from Aubrey and had pate, pasta and red wine in a little french bar for dinner. Gary has also caught up on his beloved pasteries. We climbed the steps off the Tower Eiffel and watched it sparkle at night. As we walked back along the Seine we stopped to observe a group of young people sitting on the bank playing music and singing. Passers by including us were singing along, so good.
18/05/2013: Our hosts and now good friends Michele and Didier took us to a couple of very good museums depicting typical Parisean life. We then went to dinner then onto a burlesque show. The theatre was so small I had to rest my feet on the stage. Consequently, Gary got an eyefull of female flesh, much to his delight. A very large lady chose him to bury her breasts into his face and being Gary he was happy to oblige much to the delight of the crowd.
19/05/2013: Left our hosts to have a Sunday sleep in and headed for the local markets. We had a coffee and the most delicious custard tart we have ever tasted. The only custard that beats it is Joan Hickey's baked custard.
From there a full day in the Louvre and even more enjoyable, the more modern Le Musee d'Orsay featuring Monet, Degas, Renoir, Gaugain and Van Gogh.
Another meal with a bottle of red in a local cafe where we chatted with a couple from Florida and exchanged travel stories. Life is good
20/05/2013: Today is raining and cold, feels like our winter. Michele and Didier drove us to a château in a little town on the outskirts of Paris, it housed a very interactive museum on Paris life in the early 1900's through the eyes of the impressionist artists, we loved it . In the evening we went to a Jazz Restaurant in the centre of Paris, we had duck for the main, a dish neither of us is fond of but this was absolutely delicious, the meat just fell off the bone.
Have completely changed our plans again, now heading south to try and beat the cold.
