We left LA to travel down to San Diego, travelled along the Pacific Coast Road which was absolutely beautiful, Hunginton Beach, Laguna Beach etc. Stopped to watch some guys surfing and Gary had his chat with the locals.
We are staying just south of San Diego in an airbnb, a nice room in a lovely condo with a few other people. We got ourselves settled and locked our stuff in our room then decided to do a test run to the Mexican border to get familar with the crossing before heading down to Baja in 4 days. It was only 4 klms from our lodgings but the freeway was manic, we were in the middle lane when we saw the last US exit and no one would let us change lanes to exit. Before we knew it we were at the border crossing to Mexico, no turning back and no passports. Ended up in the back streets of Tijuana totally lost with no GPS. Screeming directions at each other we finally made it back to the US border, but more problems. No passports only our Australian drivers licences. Out of the car and off to Homeland detention where we spent the next 4 hours detained as illegals. They wanted our passports and we did not have them, would not let us leave to go get them. Owner of accommodation was away, his girlfriend Kelly let us in and I did not have her contact details. They checked us out thoroughly and said that our entry from Canada back to us was not on the computer so we had overstayed our visa and were illegal unless we could produce our passports. An impass, so for $500 they gave Gary a waiver so he could enter America drive the 4 klms and collect our passports. I had to spend another hour in detention. As Gary was being escorted to our car some Mexicans did a runner, all the border security took chase and captured them running up the freeway. Gary said just like TV. Anyway back to our digs safe and sound and somewhat poorer, no luxury hotels now.
A good tale to tell our grandkids one day. All good and having a good laugh with our co tennants.
