Have travelled 3/4 of the way across this huge country past 3 days. We have driven through torrential rain, dust storms, high winds and passed a dead body on the road this morning. We have travelled 40,000klms so far.We passed through El Paso which is in USA on one side of the highway and Ciudad Juarez on the other. This is where the drug cartel control the drug trafficking, well one of the many spots but here Mexico is a stones throw away and it is so abvious. Buildings just shanties on barren hillsides with dirt tracks for roads. We passed through a police check point but must have looked OK, they just waved us through. We did stop for petrol but that was all. Not a place you want to spend time in.
Our destination Tucson, Arizona. Gary has been wanting to see the Saguaro Cactus and boy did we hit paydirt. Tucson has millions of them and they are wonderful specimens, really tall with many arms.
Tucson is a very nice city, very dry and barren but the houses really fit into the environment and all their surrounds are various forms of cacti, looks great. This is a big university town, so again young people everywhere and lots of quirky shops and funky cafes and bars. It is freezing though, we cant believe we are so far south and still snow on the mountains. The locals say it is a record cold snap 5 straight days of freezing temps. Am glad its temporary, one week ago we were in the warmth of Florida, crazy!!!!!
