We left Knoxville early for the 6 hour drive to Washington. I decided to book airbnb as we were staying for a few days and wanted a change from the cheap motels. Sick of the threadbare sheets and towels. The drive was good, very foggy but the roads are fantastic. Drove across Virginia, one of the nicest looking states, much more green with lovely little country villages. The people seem more house proud here, no junk lying around. Gary is finally listening to country music, its been the only thing on the radio except for some religious stations and they are not on his playlist. The poor christmas carol just gets a small session, the radio is just like the TV remote!! Our GPS had a freak out and would not download the address so on arriving in Washington we had to go back to basics, yes the map. You should see the freeways here, it is like a maze. Took 6 hours to drive 600 klms to Washington and another 3 hours to find our accommodation. The GPS sent us 30 klms in the wrong direction. It was dark, raining and peak hour. I tossed Louise the GPS before she was murdered. Talk about stress, Im trying to read the map in near darkness while Gary or should I say Lucifer tried to keep the car on the road. He was on the verge of turning around and heading for Mexico. Somehow we got on the right road and made it to our destination.
Staying in a predomately black neighbourhood, though middle working class so seems very safe. Our host met us out front, a lovely african man. Gary was so relieved we made it, he was a bit emotional and gave the man a big hug, maybe it was more of a collapse into his arms, either way the man took it very well. We have the cutest little studio appt fully self contained and our hosts live upstairs. The bourbon got a good nudge that night. Today we headed into Washington for the day. Most of the attractions are within walking distance. It was a beautiful sunny day and was so good to be out walking. We could not believe how small The White House was, Gary asked one of the secret service men "what have they done with the top of the white house? When he told us they use the capitol building as the white house in movies because it is bigger, Gary said, but its not white enough. The guy was african american!!!!!!
19/12 : Today we headed back into the city on the metro. Funny, for about 3 stops we are the only whites on t
he train and as we get closer to the city the caucasions join us. We spent 6 hours in the Smithsosian Air and Space Museum. It was fantastic. Saw 3D film of the Hubble Space Telescope project, gave us the sensation of
being in space viewing more than 250,000 celestial objects.
Two days just not enough, may have to return.
Off to NY tomorrow, driving to Long Island OMG!!!!!

Renee Walker on

Was the 3D movie narrated by Leonardo Di Caprio? That's the one Scott and I were telling Dad about that we saw on the IMAX in London!
