Memphis left us a little disappointed, very rundown and music not so great. We did stay for once in the better part of town at a curch which housed the Pilgrim Hostel, not a great experience but location was good. While walking in the suburbs we met a lovely couple Tom and Carla who lived in the cutest house. They invited us in, our first invite into someones home. They had all the christmas decorations up and Carla had made cookies, so nice. We headed onto Nashville, what a great town. Music, music. We went to the famous Tootsies and the place was wall to wall bodies partying. I wore my cowgirl boots so felt part of the scene, EVERYONE wears boots here.
The lead singer spent the entire performance on the bar, stage too small. The owner was there and pulled out a wad of cash, mainly $1 bills and threw it into the air. Came down like confetti. The place erupted, we managed to grab a few notes and gave them to the band. No local bands get paid to perform, they rely on tips so twice during a performance they send around the money jar. If you want to request a song you pay. Two guys paid $20 each to hear Jessie's Girl.
I developed the most terrible tooth ache, had to endure for 4 days until I could see a dentist in Nashville. Was such a nice practice and the dentist was lovely. I had a large abscess and needed RCT but due to time constraints we settled on a Pulpotomy, a less complex procedure. Cost wise, I feared the worst but was pleasantly surprised, comparable to home especially as it was an emergancy. So good to be out of pain and hopefully travel insurance will cover. Visited the country music Hall of Fame Museum and the world famous Grand Ole Opry. Also visited Hermitage Plantation, the former home of the 17th president Andrew Jackson. He was a lifelong supporter of slavery and at one time owned 150 slaves. They have a special exhibit telling their stories.
We are now in the lovely town of Knoxville TN. Last night they had markets and an iceskating ring in the centre square and all the surrounding trees had fairy lights, was beautiful and people so friendly. You cannot get served
liquor in this town without showing ID, doesn't matter if your old they still want it. Poor Gary had to eat Pizza without a beer or a bourbon, I know what your thinking, but he did survive. Water is not a poisonous substance.

Nothing worse than a toothache when you're away. I broke a tooth in London and had to get to a dentist. Like you, wasn't the worst dental experience I've had and my tooth was fixed in no time, and was cheaper than I pay here! Wishing you and Gaz a fantastic Christmas, and look forward to more updates of your travels! Lots of love..... Rhon & Geof xxxx
