We thought we had seen it all, but todays visit to Zion National Park in Utah was the icing on the cake. We hiked and climbed for 5 hours in this majestic park. Our goal was the famous Angles Landing Trail, a 5.4 mile verticle climb (1400ft) elevation with sheer drop offs. The final 400 mtrs was via a chain connected to the sheer rockface.
I was only able to do part of the chained area due to my shoes having poor tread, too much risk of slipping so I sat on the sheer cliff and waited for Gary to do the remainder of the trail. He came back and said he had to walk across a rock bridge about 1 mtr wide with only a chain for balance and a 1000 ft drop off on each side and he is frightened of heights. As I waited people came past and some managed the trail with confidence and others were terrified, clinging to the rock face. Some got so close to the edge I thought they would fall. It was totally nerve racking sitting there and by the time Gary got back I was feeling ill. There have been two fatal falls from Angles Landing and one near miss. We spent the rest of the day doing walks in the gorges and came back to motel exhausted but buzzing from our adventure. Will post photos as soon as able. Off to Flagstaff in Arizona tomorrow, part of Route 66. Also Thanksgiving tomorrow, just as important as Christmas. Cant believe how cheap it is to buy a Turkey. We pay way too much for things in Aus.
