Belem is a beautiful colonial town with Portuguese influence. Loved it as it was very historical. As both my parents are Portugese and i learnt about Belem in Portuguese school i HAD to visit. My first backpackers hostel experience and one i don't want to repeat! Off the bus in the rain, walked to the hostel and had to wait 2 hours for my room to vacate. Once i did get in it was like being in a box your refrigerator is delivered in except the walls of the cardboard refrigerator box are thicker than the walls in this hostel!!
I met a backpacker from Spain who asked me to accompany her to pick up a thong (a flip flop) from some guys room. Apparently they had the same thongs and she walked out with one of his. No shit, this was a 1.5 hour ordeal for a $2 thong, turns out he was on a boat so we had to get past security etc.......:(
Great markets with fruit, veges, fish and local herbs. Went to the Zoo to see anacondas, boa constrictors and jaguars. The jaguars were striding in circles as it was feeding time, great sitting there watching them. Lots of beautiful old churches and a beautiful fort where i sat watching the sunset next to an old man with the same surname as mine, he proceeded to tell me the history of our surname dating back to the 1500īs royalty... Nice, need to look up my ancestral inheritance..... maybe fund another trip!!!
