Having viewed the fox glacier from the air at stupid miles an hour we headed for the Franz Josef glacier (just round the corner) to view it at a slightly more sedate pace!  So on went the clampons (wouldn't want to stand on anyones foot with those i assure you) and off we stomped up the glacier - which is really quite steep and fairly chilly!  It was only after we got past the first bit that was fairly rocky, that it really dawned on me that i was actually walking on a huge piece of ice that was changing the shape of the mountains either side as i stood on it!  It really is surreal as you walk though crevices and little tunnels and all around you is icy and what is more the ice is blue!

Anyway after a bit of a rest, some sandwiches and a bit of off roading, we begun our descent - which was possibly more knackering than the ascent!!  Paticularly when you knew that you still had a 40 minute walk to get back to the bus in the carpark!!  We were very glad to hit the sack that evening!
