After a seriously cold and fairly rocky crossing we reached the capital of New Zealand, Wellington!! I was very excited because we would be staying with my estranged bestest friend from junior school, Milla, who is studying in Welly!!
It was so nice to be staying in a home again and not only that with such lovely people! There was a lot of catching up to do- i am in awe at my ability to remember the most random things from my childhood ever! Wellington is a very small capital city (in keeping with the rest of the country) so i liked it a lot!! We made sure we took full advantage of the cafes and quickly found a favourite outlet of hot chocolate!! We also went to Te Papa - the museum of new zealand! It is fantastic, everything was presented really well, my favourite displays were the fascinating skelletons of whales, dolphins and other sea life and the Maori section which included a marae (a communal meeting place), a meeting house, store house and many Maori artifacts (clothing, weapons, tools and jewellery) - the carving on which was incredibly intricate and beautiful!
Of course we did our usual street pounding in the wrong direction! Took a trip on a cable car up to the beautiful botanical gardens and a walk down! We became temporary regulars at the bar where Camilla worked and had a delicious meal at a thai/chinese place! I finally got to watch the hillarious Eagle versus Shark, were introduced to all sorts of kiwi music including fat freddys drop (which i would paticularly reccomend), were driven up Victoria hill and took in the glorious views and driven to the coast from where we could see the South island (still floating despite the fact we had left it)!! Ooo yes we also went to visit the British shop which stocked delights like boost bars (I don't know why they don't have them here but they don't) and sherbert fountains!!
Sadly the time came when we had to say goodbye to Camilla (hopefully not for quite as long this time) and Welly! So bags packed we set off for Taupo aka middle-earth (for all you lotr fans)!!
