God these buses are killing me - 5 more hours of sweaty barfy travel yesterday to get us back to the capital. Turns out that during those 5 hours, my backpack was resting in a large puddle of fish guts in the luggage hold under the bus. Later on, dogs were actually gagging as my bag and I dripped past them on the short walk from the bus depot to our hotel.

The stench was of little consequence to me though as, sometime on the bus, I prematurely entered the gloomy, introspective part of my trip. Was thinking that this inevitable phase of shunning human contact and listening to a lot of depressing music would come a little later in my journey, but it popped up, unannounced and unwelcome, sometime in the late afternoon. After all the sweet stuff I have been doing, how can the funk descend? Just my brain doing its thing I suppose.

Anyway, arrived back in San Jose for the last official night of the tour. We all went for a truly revolting ´Italian´ meal (the parmesan came in tiny sachets and the pomodoro sauce was watered down tomato soup), and afterwards I quickly made my excuses and slunk off to a sleepless night in my creeky bed.

Things were a little better in the mind of Susan this morning and so I went to the museum to see the country´s amazing collection of pre-Columbian gold - this place was really wicked before the Europeans got here and screwed everything up. Turns out, the women were in charge of most of the important things and everything from funerals to weddings were celebrated by consuming large amounts of chocolate. The museum is built underground and has enormous vault doors to protect what must be millions of dollars worth of teeny gold armadillos, frogs and birds.

Am reluctantly heading back into town tonight for dinner with the remaining members of my travel group. The four other girls on this tour talk endlessly about settling down with their total loser men who beat them up, verbally abuse them or are jobless drunks. They moan about it, but then state quite matter-of-factly that they have surrendered to their fate as they are my age and they ´just have to take what they can get´. Kill me now!

Bizarrely, the tour leader confided in me last night that despite missing her Israeli boyfriend during these last 2 weeks, she has managed to sleep with 2 strangers during our travels round the country (Fernando the waiter and Jose the tour guide) and has consequently had to make an urgent appointment with a gynaecologist - nice! I could tell she wanted me to ask her about it but after the meal we had just had, I didn´t really think I could stomach the details!

Oh, and my scary amourous lesbian new best friend is angling for me to go back to her hotel tonight for a midnight skinny dip in the pool. Time for a quick exit I think!

I have some more pics, and will upload them in LA - no time now, gotta pack and run!
