Entry 18 of 33 | show all | print this entry

Before leaving the hotel, we wrote an email to our new Vietnamese friends Hung and Nguyen. They have asked us to visit them in Hanoi, so we need to make contact.

We're collected by the Sinh Cafe bus at 8.30am and drop off our luggage at their office (ready for the overnight sleeper). Next we move on to our first of 3 tombs. Note: the difference between a tomb and a temple is that the tombs have more steps to climb! It is now steadily raiming, so we've got our umbrellas out and are using these to avoid most of the rain. After the 1st temple, we visit and incence and conical hat (traditional Vietnamese hat) making village.

Next tomb, still raining. Third tomb, we stayed in the bus as the water was cascading down the steps. Lunch was at a local restaurant and was delcicious.

After lunch, we visited the Citadel. This is the Palace where the King and his Queen and concubines (some had 500!) lived. Quite impressive architecture and bonsai / topiary. By this time, the rain has really kicked in and we are wearing our 55c ponchos again, as well as using the umbrellas.

The final stop on our tour is the Pagoda - an active monastry. However, both the Pagoda and the dragon boat trip down the Perfume River are cancelled due to floods. The water has risen approx. 60cm in a few hours, preventing boats being able to get under bridges. So, the tour bus takes us to the Sinh Cafe to wait for the overnight sleep bus to Hue.
