Did you know................if you have a car accident here, they do not have enough Ambulances on the island to pick you up, so someone who witnessed the crash, or who is okay but involved in the crash has to find a car (if they do not have one of their own or theirs was damaged in crash) to drive the injured person/s to hospital, they flag down a car, if the owner of the car that they flag down does not want to give up their car or drive the injured to hospital, it is legal to drag the driver out of his car and use his car to take the injured to Hospital, but there has to be a witness in the car as it arrives at hospital or the driver can get into trouble!!!!!! but they said on the whole everyone knows the rules so if there is a crash, a witness will just get into an available car nearby and the owner would drive them to hospital anyway
And, it is illgal to smoke in public, we didn't know this on a trip to Galle, when all the locals started shouting "Police Cigarrette" over and over and pointing at us, so low and behold policeman comes, smells cigarette??? and then driver explains don't smoke in towns?? thanks for telling us before hand!!!!
AND............Its illegal to sell Alcohol in restaurants, cause we began to wonder why when you ask for a Beer or an Old Arrack (local spirit, made from Coconut, nice with coke) the person serving you walks down the street and comes back with a Beer or glass with Spirit in, so we asked, and they told us it was illegal, and if Police come in you have to say you bought in yourself!!! Okay then!!! but they then said Police will hide and watch you get it, and then they make you pay them a fine and they may send his mate round too for money, and if you don't pay it, then it gets taken further.
We have discovered that Police are a tad bit corrupt here, we won't go into it too much but we got first hand experience of paying an off duty police officer who was our driver for the day on a trip out, 2000 Rupees, who then decided to say we hadn't payed him!!!!!! He didn't get anymore money, we made our point loud and clear!!!!
Learnt a bit about the Tamil Tigers too, they want control of the north and East of the Island, and the fighting with the Sri Lankan Military is very alive, and it does concern the locals, but we don't discuss it too much, bit of a sore subject
On a happier note, each full moon, the turtles come from the sea onto the bay of Unawatuna and lay and bury their eggs, so the next full moon is the 28th, so we're gonna stay up and look out for them, and maybe a few of the locals may too!!!!! it'll be good, locals said 100k turtles come up!!!!!
If anyone fancies a trip to Unawatuna, the food and welcome in Lucky Tuna Restaurant is brilliant and the owner Lale also owns accomodation, and Indie who works in the restaurant will gladly let you watch the English Footie matches too!!
A great place to visit on a Holiday, and again, i cannot believe how lovely the people are, and we are getting used to eating in Restaurants and going back 2 days later to pay!!!!!
But it is the courage that the locals have after the Sunami and their attitude to life and friendship that makes the place, they are all so happy and positve.
