Back to now. Man oh man, do I hate moving. All this running around and paperwork and standing in lines and figuring out the German system, I'm genuinely HAPPY to be doing that. It's culturally different and therefore at least interesting. Even my terrible, terrible hangover yesterday, well I was still content to sit on my balcony and watch the fall leaves change from light honey to saffron to rust. But moving. Germany couldn't save me from this situation, oh no. I've never moved without a car for one, so now I could only lug a pathetically small amount of stuff with me each trip, and each trip is down flights of stairs, walking blocks and blocks, waiting for a tram, hoping said tram isn't so full that I have to stand the whole way laden with boxes, off the tram and walking again, finally in my building and then upstairs, and then back for more. My stuff only took two trips, and now the rest was Mette's, making my brain grumble all the more. Especially knowing that I'll have to repeat this process in less than two weeks. I don't appreciate, can't appreciate Munich, the crisp air and color of the trees, the relaxed feeling of Sundays, while I'm struggling down the sidewalk, acutely aware of the blisters on my palms and the strain of my muscles.
My reprieve is between trips, back at my quiet flat with the door to the balcony flung open to let in the probably last warm day of the year. It would no doubt be faster not to, but I put everything down, heat more water, and drink a cup of tea on the balcony with my big tree for company. The only sound is the rustling of the dried leaves, soon to fall, all but drowning out the sounds of the city far in the distance.
Something I learned today: I actually miss my car.
