So I am now on day 6 and I have finally found an internet cafe with a decent connection!
After my induction I felt a bit more settled and got an idea of what things are going to be like in St Louis. Started my french lessons this week but dont think they are helping much! they are really intensive and I dont seem to remember anything from secondary school! Hopefully I will improve cause it is definitely beneficial to have some french phrases...even watching all the dubbed over tv shows to help!
So a typical day for me so far...usually wake up when the family leave for work and school or because of the singing/chanting from the mosque around the corner. Get up and make myself some coffee with evaporated milk...sounds horrible but I am getting quite used to it! Getting bored of eating baguette with butter for breakfast, seriously craving some cereal and cold milk!
Then I study some french or go for a walk around town which is always interesting. people are really nice here and their are kids everywhere wanting to shake my hand or speak to me...or just shout `TOUBAB` which means white person in wollof.
Lunch is usually rice fish and vegetables all in one big bowl for everyone to share..pretty used to that now too! Have tried some very weird food so far..not loving dried fish which is really popular in St. Louis.
After lunch its 3 hours of french lessons at a school round the corner. Dinner is usually not until 9pm ish and so far has been all good...chicken, fish, spag bog, beef (or so i thought...apparently it is goat!)
Usually meet up with some of the volunteers in the evening...last night pub quiz which was good fun!
Starting my placement next week which I am really looking forward to and will fill up my days a bit more...
Going to attempt to upload photos now...hopefully it will work!

U ntil next time....

hey honey
Great to hear you're settling in and adapting to life out there. Cereal and fresh milk milk aside it sounds like their diet pretty much suits you to a tee...
I'm sure the french will get much easier when you get a grasp of the basics and start using it - i know from experience that the only way to improve is open your mouth, try and not afraid of making a mistake. I guess tomorrow must be your first day at the orphange and i really hope it goes well.
Not too much to report from here, except that Heather arrived yesterday from the mountains looking all tanned and healthy and its great to have her at the flat. A bit too much red wine was drunk last night... but no surprise there eh?? She sends you a great big hello!!!
Looking forward to the next entry.. xxx
