Three buses, three taxis and a boat later and I finally arrived in pretty, colonial Leon, home to Central America`s largest cathedral, Ruben Dario`s house and many fallen martyrs. Modern Leon draws hoards of backpackers for a slightly less historically sophisticated activity though. Sliding down C.Am`s youngest active volcano (this part of the country is just full of superlatives) on a tray is dangerous, exhausting and probably the most fun you can have in under 15 seconds, ever! I was a total wuss and applied my feet/brakes the whole way down, although the proud owners of bleeding tattered limbs I`ve met around the country boast speeds of up to 60km an hour. The adrenalin has inspired me though and I'm off to the beach to learn to surf tomorrow...on water this time, hopefully it hurts less than volcanic rock!
