Luckily we had enough time before taking the van back to drop our stuff off at the YHA where we were staying. When we pulled up it did shock me because it was an absolute building site. The whole front of the YHA was covered in scaffolding and looked like a building site They're having some sort of extension works done so I wasn't best pleased when we checked in but after staying there for a few days I soon realised that they didn't affect anything at all and the hostel is really really nice. the room we had was lovely, probably the 3rd nicest Oz hostel we've stayed in. The room had air con which was an absolute blessing in the Brisbane humidity! We dropped the van back all ok but had to get the bus back into town. It was just pulling up to the stop when we started to cross the road so made a dash for it but missed it. Fortunately for us the bus driver took pity on us and pulled up down the road to let us on, very fortunate really because another passenger later on told us the bus only comes once an hour!!
Brisbane was really good but not a patch on Sydney or Melbourne. We found the casino (by accident!) on the frist nice and took full advantage of it's super-duper air con.
Friday was Australia Day and Brisbane had a host of activities down by the water. Brisbane is seperate by a river, much like the River Thames in London. The South Bank reminded me a little bit of London's embankment really. They had all sorts of events on, we made a kite, saw the local radio station broadcast live, saw a concert, ate noodles by the side of the river and entered into the Australian tradition of getting really really drunk to celebrate it;s national day. We spent he day generally walking up and down the south bank and across the bridges just having a really good look around. Slap bang in the middle of the riverside park area is a man made beach where everyone goes for a refreshing dip. We didnt'; realise it was there otherwise we may have been tempted to take our swimming stuff down because the heat and humidity does get to you after a while - although cooling down in an air conned pub with cold beer does the trick! We caught the firework display in the evening which was great, really really good.
We visited the Brisbane City museam, the Queensland museam and the Art Gallery, all of which are well worth a visit. The Brisbane City museam one was a bit weird, one of the dislpays was about Miss World Australia, which I didn't really get but the photography exhbition on downstairs more than made up for that.
