Started the day at the Ameristar casino as we'd seen a coupon for a buy-one-get-one-free buffet and casino buffets are great if you get a good one as you can stay for as long as you want scoffing as much as you want! Lee signed up for the free reward card and we went to stuff our faces. The buffet was really good, most have salad, pasta, some sort of roast meat, pizza, fish, plus a range of other lush stuff as well as deserts and ice cream and fruit. Bonus on this one was a chocolate fountain! It was an absolute bargain for 5 dollars. We stayed for about 2 hours I think eating and pondering over our route to Cozad. We decided to drive to Lincoln and stop over there for a bit as the Lonely Planet recommended it as quite a funky town.
Lee decided that it'd be rude to eat at a Casino and not play a bit of Blackjack so off he went to lose some money and I had a wander around the boat to see all the slot machines and stuff. We stayed in there for a bit, taking full advantage of the free coffee and self-service soft drinks and sheltering from the heat outside.
We left Council Bluffs about 3pm and drove to Lincoln via the Strategic Air and Space Museam, which is inbetween Omaha and Lincoln. We got there just an hour before it shut so had to dash around the 2 hangers of planes, bombs and space things.. but it was well worth the visit. http://www.strategicairandspace.com/
They had a flight simulator where you can take the controls of a fighter plane, Lee had a go on this and impressed the man looking after it with the amount of times he went inverted. He commented that it had been so fully tested in a long while!
It's been unbelievable hot today, 110f, which is just too hot to do anything really. So it's a good job that the places we have been had air con and were inside. We drove to Lincoln and stopped at a very cheap Econo-Lodge near the airport. The sun was beating down on our door so much that the metal had expanded so we couldn't open or shut it without some force.
I tried to open it to go and get some ice and managed to bash my right big toe quite badly and break the nail inwards. God, did I cry! It hurt so much. We had to wait in the room for a couple of hours till it cooled down enough to go into Lincoln. Only trouble with that is Lincoln, for a State Capital, isn't very big so by the time we rocked up at 8:30pm (when it was still around 99f) it was quite quiet. We drove around the little town in the car as it was too hot to get out then parked up in the train station and braved the heat to find some food.
Most places close at 10pm in Lincoln so we only stayed long enough to have a look around and eat Alligator at Billy Buzzards.
Headed back to the motel shortly afterwards as it was a bit of a drive away and was treated to lincoln's cable tv with Catfish wrestling!!!
