lee's watch broke today, he thought it was half nine, when I tried to wake him up and really it was almost 11! We hadn't secured any accomodation in Chicago yet so when I checked out the Motel guy said we could use our phone and it wouldn't be any different from calling from a payphone, well... 15 minutes later and a phone bill for $10 we learnt a very important lesson - never believe anything Motel people tell you!! Calling within the US is a very complex issue. Local calls are free of charge, local meaning somewhere you can walk too (ie not very far!) everywhere else counts as long distance, even if it's in the same State. The payphones are all different as well, some you put the money in before you call some after the phone is connected - honestly, you need some sort of degree to try and work these systems out. Anyway, we feel better knowing that we've donated quite a few dollars to the US phone system - humph!
After leaving our Motel in Detroit, we headed to the Henry Ford Museam and Greenfield Village - http://www.hfmgv.org/ It was too late to do both attractions so we decided to do the Museam, which was a good call as while we were in there the rain arrived
The museam contains a huge amount of stuff, cars, bicycles, motorbikes, god, loads of it. Check out the website for the full list. I was most impressed with the range of Presidential cars they had on show, including the one that JFK was shot in. I also saw Lincoln's chair, one that he actually sat in and also the bus on which Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat . You can actually get on the bus and sit there listening to a tape of her talking about what she did, which I thought was great. They don't mind you walking around with food or drink, they let you climb on some of the exhibits and you're able to take photos, good museam!
In one corner of the place they've got a WienerMobile Cafe, if you need to know about this then check out this link - http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/HotDog/HDIndex.htm . From what I can gather a weiner is a hotdog and in the HF Museam they have a mobile cafe shaped like a hotdog... very amusing I can tell you! Lee and I opted for the foot long weiner with chilli on it. I've had to put all the bad things I know about hot dogs out of my mind while over here, otherwise I'd starve. Hot dogs are everywhere!
From here we headed for Chicago and rocked up at Benton Joseph Harbour, about 60 miles from Chicago for a nights kip in the cheapest Motel we've stayed in yet. :)
