We left Cedar Point and drove to Detroit today. I wasn't too keen on going but we secured some accomodation near downtown and the lady on the phone assured me it was a nice place so off we trotted. Managed to navigate quite well until we got to downtown Detroit, or rather the highway and expressway around it. Detroit is surrounded by a square of highways/expressways with pretzel shaped interchanges at both corners. How the hell you're meant to get into the place is, well was, beyond me and the Lonely Planet.

We got of the highway a bit too early I think, headed off on one route only to be presented with the bridge to bloody Canada - again! Arrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhh! Luckily I spotted the 'no return' sign before we passed it this time and we dashed across the bridge and away from Canada. Phew!

After going around in circles for ages, we stopped at a gas station and got directions, and managed to navigate our way to the Motel relatively easily Detroit

Detroit was nothing like I was expecting. We were downtown so I guess that's different from the 8mile Eminem Detroit that most people probably know. Anyway, it's a really smart place. Most places were within walking distance of our Motel, the only trouble was that Tuesday in Downtown Detroit wasn;t the most kicking. In fact, it wasn't kicking at all. We did find a cool brewing company and sampled a few home-brews, which were delicious. Beer in the US is terrible. It's all Budweiser, Miller and Light beers galor. Light beers, I mean, come on! What is that all about? Lee and I have had several discussions about why anyone would willing drink light beer but they can't get enough of it over here. You will stumble across these litte micro breweries across the US, which are like complete gems to find as they sell real beer - you know, stuff that tastes like beer rather than water (and I don't even like beer that much!).

We went to the Broadway Brewing Company for a couple while watching the baseball and then paid the Pump House Tavern a visis (as per LP) but most places were really quiet so we had a lonely walk back to our motel via the Coney Island fast food place (again, a LP recommendation!)
