We made it to the famous Rialto Beach at sunset (9:30) with high tide and very loud crashing waves. A visit to the Makah tribal museum and cultural center was fascinating, with excellent displays of the whaling canoes and longhouses that were recently excavated, having been buried and preserved by a huge mudslide 500 years ago.
We got a permit to drive down a gravel road onto tribal property to hike a very muddy trail to Cape Flattery, the most northwest point in the lower 48 states. The reward for getting muddy boots was awesome views of the Pacific ocean cliffs, seastacks, marine birds, and a lighthouse on Tatoosh Island at the entrance to the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
