Bangkok

Next stop Bangkok for a couple of days. I've (Paul) been to Bangkok before and hadn't any great desire to spend too much time in the sweatiest, smelliest city in SE Asia. We were staying on the Khao San Road which is backpacker hell. I think every westerner in the region spends some time on the gaudy Khao San Road. But at least we had pool on top of our hotel and we wouldn't be lingering too long. I think it's fair to say that Lisa won't be moving here anytime soon - although when I got her an ice lolly she cheered up immesureably.

We took a tuk tuk (little motorbike with a carriage mounted on the back) down to Chinatown and marvelled at all the chinese writing, cos that was about all that differentiated it from the rest of the city. So we quickly took tuk tuk back.

The next day was better. We wandered down to the Grand Palace, which really is terribly grand. Full of outlandish statues and gold leaf domes. The little Emerald Budha was a highlight as was Wat Pho, which sat next to the Grand Palace and was far less packed. It had a huge Budha statue lying down looking very self-satisfied. Lisa got her fortune read by a nice old teacher (she's got another 57 years to go, so long as she goes easy on the booze, and we can expect 2, maybe 3, kids) and we wandered back up to take it easy by the pool.

We had a good laugh watching 5 Irish guys (real typical bunch - the fat funny one, the tall awkward one - all bright red in the sun) all vying for the attention of one Canadian girl who left when one of them threw her sunglasses over the side of the building.. Nice moves!

So next day we got to the real point of our trip to Bangkok - a flight to Hanoi! We were only too happy to be jumping on board our plane and heading on into the unknown.
