Some of you hate valentine's with a passion...As for me, I have always loved the holdiday with or without a man....sharing in the joy of pink hearts and chocolate and cookies with sprinkles and flowers with my friends and loved ones makes me feel special. That is, until I had to Valentines evading the police, being stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere without a phone and many other mishaps.  Even though I finally have a great boyfriend on Valentine's, I am stuck not spending the joyful day of amor with him.  I hate you cupid! Here's the story....

It all started when my phone got robbed in the capital. Phones here in the DR are like gold, even my crappy PC issue phone.  I waited for a phone, only to be told I would have to come back and get one.  So there goes another trip to the Capital (about 3 hours from my site).  Just as I got a new one, it plunked out, thus another return to the capital.  That was ok, because I had planned on visiting Leah, my friend from the states who would be in Punta Cana, a resort in the East side of the country and i would have to pass through the capital anyway.  Monday morning: No wouldn't be in until Wednesday. I didn't want to come back to the capital a sixth time, especially since it would be on Valentines day and I wanted to be back in my site to spend some time with my sweetie before he had to leave for school in the evening. Also, it wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't have to traipse across the part of the country I wasn't familiar with and meet up with Leah...but I decided I would chance it just the same.

I embarked on my journey from the capital to the eastern part of the island to stay with my friend Denice in Higuey.  The next day, I emailed Leah (only form of communication with her not having a phone and me neither).  We formulated a plan: I would arrive at the resort around one-ish and meet her in the lobby.  Simple enough? Not really.

I arrived at the resort to find that the guard would not let me in since I was not a registered guest at their all inclusive.  I kicked I screamed, I flirted, but nothing worked.  Leah was waiting for me inside and not in her room, so even though the guard called several times there was no answer.  I waited in the plaza across the street from the hotel and emailed her from an internet cafe telling her to please come outside and retrieve me!  I befriended everyone in the shopping plaza who felt sorry for me, I made friends with the security office of the hotel, but the guard still would  not let me in.  He was sure that I was going to enter the resort and take advantage of their buffet, I suppose.  After waiting three hours and no sign of Leah, I was going to call it quits when I spotted her!  She had gotten my email finally.

I walked in the resort finally, thought the guard didn't see me.  I luckily had 30 minutes to chat and hang out with Leah until the next bus came .   As I was leaving, the guard saw me and began to shout at me, asking how I got in. Also, since he hadn't seen me with my bags before, he assumed I had entered and stolen someone's luggage. He started to yell at me and say he was calling the police and went to his little kiosk to do just that so I made a run for it. I found the bus to my friend Elena's site and was on my way. Only problem...I had never been to her site and I didn't know how to get there. With no phone, I had to just guess that the bus drivers would know where to leave me.  Villa Guerrero, I had said.  Where did they leave me?  La Higuera.  It sounds so similar when you are a gringa, I suppose.  I was a bit unsure as I jumped off the bus, only to find that i was in the middle of NOWHERE at night, with no phone, and one moto-taxi driver for company who I hoped would not rob me.  There were no houses, lights or the like. I realized the driver's mistake, but he was long gone.  Luckily, the moto driver was not a thug and told me he would take me to the actual city where I was to go.  I arrived and found Elena, exhausted from the days events.  I got up early this morning to go back to the capital, collect my phone and head back to Pimentel to see my sweetie and tell him all the horrible things that had happened to me so he could assure me everything would be ok.  That is, until I arrived in the office to find out that not only was my phone not ready, and would not be ready until the afternoon, but I had left my wallet in Elena's house.

I didn't make it back to Pimentel in time to see Julio.  Oh well...valentine's day is overrated anyway, right?
