On the way...

Well, I met my contact and picked up the phones on the way, and have everything I need in theory.
Saying good-bye to Chris in Chicago felt so strange. He kept reminding me that I was only going to be gone for about 48 hours (including 26 hours on planes), so all I should need was the phones, my passport, a way to pay for food and a way to contact home. I had all those things, but going off the continent for the first time still seemed so bizarre. Although upon arrival my generous friend ensured that I would be able to stay for three days plus travel time, instead of just one. This will make all the difference.
Duty free purchases available on a 13 hour flight are sneaky as hell. What else do you have to do but shop while you wait? I managed to resist. However free alcohol on trans-pacific flights seems appropriately generous of the airline, and Tanqueray and tonic was my friend on the way. And the warm, moist, scented towelettes also made me feel fancy. And definitely that I was on a flight I didn't pay for myself. :) Almonds, pretzels and crosswords keep me sane until I arrive.
So there was a guy with my name on a sign meeting me at the airport. Ever wonder who those people are getting met by guys with signs? Turns out they are me! Had dinner at the hotel with Carlos and got a quick tour of the subway and my way around town, found out my contact was delayed in Melbourne, and then crashed, knowing I had a couple more days. My original plan was to stay awake for the 24 hours I'd be here, but since I didn't sleep on the plane and now I'm staying a bit longer, sleep is welcome.

Sounds like fun and agony at the same time - agony of long flights, fun of exploring! Congrats!
