We had now arrived in Sumatra and went directly to Padang which seemed like a good idea at the time. It was pretty busy and polluted but we managed to tough it out for 1 night and stayed at a nice and trendy (ok) home stay in town which served up a tasty scrambled egg toasted sanga for brekky... The sightseeing we did in Padang was..................?
There wasn't a whole lot to see in Padang so we decided to cruise up into the mountains to Bukittinggi, which a lot of travellers had recommended. We scored a charter car ride with some locals for about $5 each, which was a good deal. The ride up was an awesome view through the valleys including a couple of waterfalls on the way.
It was a bit more of a touristy area than Padang but there still weren't many white faces around town. Because of the fact that we look like tourists (big time) all the school kids swarmed to us for interviews and to practice their English. The accommodation looked quite dodgy there so we went classy and stayed at the Novotel which was still really cheap. They have a few cool sights there, including the Clock tower, Panorama Park and the old Japanese war tunnels.
Before we flew back to Singapore we had to wait at the airport for about 5 hours. Lisa was a bit crook at the time and lost her lunch in the airport toilets. We were really looking forward to getting back to Singapore.
