We arranged for a bus to pick up in Koh Lanta to take us back to Krabi. This was a 2 hour trip in a minivan. The sun was so hot we had to close the curtains, so really didn't get a chance to see much!
In Krabi, we retrieved our big packs which we had left at the hotel a week earlier, and booked the bus to take us on to Surat Thani, and from there the night ferry to Koh Samui.
The bus from Krabi ended up being absolutely packed with tourists heading to the eastern islands, plus some were continuing on to Bangkok. This was a very crowded bus, with the hot afternoon sun streaming in to keep us cooking nicely. Unforunately, the air con wasn't working too well, so by the time we arrived in Surat Thani it was getting a bit stinky! It's also always amusing on Thai (and Cambodia) busses - as soon as you leave they put on a DVD to entertain us. Usually it's a Thai movie with badly translated English subtitles if we are lucky - usually violent fighting type movies with lots of shouting. This bus ride showed crappy American movies (American Pie for one) - also with badly translated sub-titles. The translations alone almost make it entertaining!
We arrived in Surat Thani around 7.30pm and had to wait for a few hours for the night ferry to depart at 11.30.
We put our bags on the boat. This boat is a cargo boat - and the sleeping area is on the top floor. The ceiling is so low that we couldn't stand up. They have two rows of tiny mattresses all along the sides of the boat, each numbered, and closely packed in next to each other. Hmmmmmm... We found our allocated mattresses, dropped our bags, then went out for some fresh air while waiting for the boat to depart.
We grabbed a bit to eat then waited. This is when things started to go wrong! Debbie was suddenly wracked with some pretty violent and unexpected vomiting. Nice.
After an hour of this, we decided it best to stay the night in Surat Thani rather then jump on a ferry that would take 7 hours (and most likely be full of other Thais who were also likely to get sea sick!). I unloaded our bags, and I went off to find a cheap room for the night. Found something quite cheap and very basic - but reasonably clean.
She is fine today, and we are now booked on a speed boat for Koh Samui (a 2 hour trip). Have to say I didn't mind too much as I didn't relish the idea of this boat!!
So tonight we will be in Koh Samui... ...
