First stop was to be Newberry Caldera..a volcanic crater. We made it halfway up the road only to discover that heavy snow meant the road was closed. Surprise surprise! We turned around and headed to the second stop..Crater Lake. Our gps wanted to take us the fastest way there which meant it wanted to take us on unsealed roads. That's what we have a 4wd for! I turned off onto a dirt road, looking forward to the adventure ahead ..only to have to turn around 600m into it when the snow returned and the chance of being bogged wasn't too appealing! Phin took over and we tried a few other roads in...once we made it a few kms in...but in the end just had to drive a few kms further south and back track. Once we made the turn off to Crater Lake we realized why we couldn't get much further
slowly wound around steep corners as we climbed to the parking lot. You could only see the top of the door and the sign at the top of the building that said "visitors centre"..the rest of it was buried! But when we climbed up the snow to the viewpoint...wow!!!! Very beautiful. The h2o of the lake is only rain and melted glacial ice as no lakes or rivers feed into it so it is super pure. In summer you can do a 33mile drive around the rim but unfortunately the snow makes it impossible now...however it does make it amazingly picturesque.
After a quick bowl of soup to defrost we were back on the road again.
A couple of hours later we arrived in Jacksonville. This little town is world heritage listed and all the shop fronts are in original early 1900s style. We had a nice dinner at the Jacksonville inn and then were driving to California.
As we hit the state crossing we had the stereo blaring "California" by Phantom Planet, the theme song from the OC! The lady and the fruit/vegetable looked at us a little strange but I'm sure it happens all the time! The next 20miles were winding roads through the very start of the redwood forest...a little scary in the dark of the night.
We drove into Crescent city at 9pm and had planned to stay at a campsite but there wasn't much point paying $35 to camp when we would just pull up, sleep in the car and then cook breakfast in the morning..so we decided to cheat on walmart and slept in a Safeway carpark!
April 21 Update
Lisa: "In Bend, Oregon.. thought the further south we drove the warmer it would be..but we woke this morning surrounded by snow and snow on the car!! Crazy!!! Driving into California this afternoon!"
Phin: “Still freezing! Bring on California!!!!! ASAP! Someone stole my wet gym shorts from shower....suspect fat staring old man... Slightly odd and frightening!"
